The Nano3Bio consortium
A strong consortium of appropriately experienced and highly motivated partners from academia and industry has been convened for the Nano3Bio project. It consists of high level teams from different disciplines – namely from Biology, Biomedicine, Molecular Genetics, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Physico-Chemistry, Nanotechnology, and Nanobiotechnology, complemented by Bioeconomy, Law and Media Communication, Management and Consultancy.
Furthermore the consortium represents eight nationalities and different sectors: six Universities, two Research Centres, 13 start-up or well established SMEs and one large company.
Below you will find a very brief description of each partner.
University of Münster
The Institute for Biology and Biotechnology of Plants (IBBP) is a worldwide number one address for structure-function relationships of chitosans. Moreover Prof. Dr. Bruno Moerschbacher from the University of Münster is the Nano3Bio project coordinator.
The Centre of expertise “Industrial Biotechnology and Biocatalysis” of Ghent University has a strong research tradition in industrial biotechnology, particularly directed towards the biocatalytic synthesis of chemicals through either microbial fermentation or the use of isolated enzymes. The laboratory possesses state-of-the-art equipment for research in the field of industrial biotechnology. A range of bioreactors is available with process control and data acquisition software.
Institut Quimic De Sarria
The IQS is one of the founding members of the Ramon Llull University. The mission of IQS is the full training of people with knowledge and skills to create, lead and manage competitive organizations and also to highlight research and technology towards the service of industry. Teaching and Research at IQS-URL are increasingly oriented to the service of society, focused on the industrial needs in order to improve competitiveness in business and industrial innovation.
Kungliga Tekniska Hoegskolan
The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) is the largest technical university in Sweden. It hosts a broad range of education and research programs, especially in natural sciences and engineering. The KTH School of Biotechnology has a highly competitive research program divided into 8 Divisions hosting 10 Centres of Excellence and involved in many EU-funded projects.
Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique
CNRS, the French national centre for scientific research, is a public basic research organisation. CNRS has service and research units spread throughout the country and covers all fields of research. Interdisciplinary programmes and actions offer a gateway into new domains of scientific investigation and enable CNRS to address the needs of society and industry. The Institut de Biologie de l’Ecole Normale Supérieure (IBENS) in Paris participates in Nano3Bio.
Danmarks Tekniske Universitet
The Technical University of Denmark is the largest and leading research environment in Denmark for training engineers and for technical scientific research. It is recognized internationally as a leading university in the areas of technology and the natural sciences and is known for its business-oriented approach, its focus on sustainability and its appealing study environment. DTU is ranked as No 1 in the Nordic region and No 4 in Europe and No 30 in the world.
The UHEI is one of the leading universities in Germany and top-ranked institutions in the world of international science and part of various graduate schools and clusters of excellence promoting translational research. As partner of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and other external research units, molecular and cell biological research is defined as one fundamental field of focus.
University of Hyderabad
University of Hyderabad (HYDER) is a premier academic institution in India established by Government of India (GoI). HYDER has been accredited as one of the top most Universities in the country. The Department of Plant Sciences (DPS) is an integral part of the School of Life Sciences at UH. The Department is an active member of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Life Sciences, which is highest recognition by UGC to any teaching and research establishment in India. The DPS is known for its major contributions in molecular plant physiology, plant biology, microbial biotechnology and environmental biology.
Thermo Fisher Scientific GENEART GmbH
Thermo Fisher Scientific GENEART GmbH is a leading integrated solution provider in the field of DNA engineering and downstream processing to facilitate early steps in the development of pharmaceuticals and industry enzymes. Proprietary technology platforms range from the manufacture of RNA- and codon optimized synthetic genes, combinatorial biology up to the production of DNA-based pharmaceuticals. Since February 2014, Geneart is part of the US based company Thermo Fisher Scientific as an integral part of their synthetic biology initiative.
Gillet Chitosan EURL
GILLET CHITOSAN is EURL (unipersonnal limited company), directed by Dr. Dominique Gillet, handling the production and the marketing of one of the largest chitin / chitosan plant in the world, processing 5000 MT of shrimp shell per annum, producing 150 MT of chitin per annum, and 50 MT per annum of very well defined chitosans. Gillet has 20 years experience in chitin and chitosan production and has participated to 5 European projects, using chitosan in fields of biotechnology, medical, and agriculture.
Cosphatec is an SME developing, producing and trading raw-materials to the manufacturers of consumer products in the cosmetic industry. Cosphatec is focused on plant-derived cosmetics and provides German and international partners e.g. with multifunctionals, antioxidants, co-emulsifier and oils. This includes several certified products (ECO-CERT and NaTrue) which can be used in sustainable, natural cosmetic products.
Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant VZW
BBEPP is a SME located in Ghent, Belgium. It is a flexible and diversified pilot plant, capable of developing, scaling up and optimizing a broad variety of biobased processes up to an industrial level. It can perform the entire value chain, from the green resources up to the final product. BBEPP intends to close the gap in the innovation chain of the bio-based economy, bridging science and industrial production. It is operating according to the open innovation service model. Companies and institutes throughout the world that are active in the bio-based economy can make use of these facilities for their technological developments.
Greenaltech S.L. is a Biotech Company devoted to R&D and industrial exploitation of microalgae as biofactories of natural & high added-value products for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Based in Barcelona, Greenaltech’s mission is to deliver custom-engineered microalgae solutions at the industrial level drawn from our proprietary collection of microalgae and our optimized culture processes. 2.-0 LCA consultants (limited liability partnership) is an internationally oriented consultancy company dedicated to Life Cycle Assessment and related tools such as Integrated Product Management. We initiate and take part in nonprofit activities at the highest technical level, e.g. in ISO, SETAC and UNEP. Past and current projects include EU projects on standards for LCA data and input to the EU resources strategy, national and international projects on database development, prioritisation within the Integrated Product Policy, analysis of product policy options, development of life cycle assessment methodology, as well as specific LCAs and reviews for European industry associations and international companies.

Lyon Ingénierie Projets
Lyon Ingénierie Projets (LIP) is a subsidiary of the University of Lyon, dealing with collaborative research projects set-up and management. Lyon Ingénierie Projets shall ensure smooth management of the Nano3Bio project, and support the consortium in administrative, legal and financial aspects. LIP ensures that planned outputs are delivered in due time. LIP also monitors the budget and the spent resources.
Care Sense Consulting
CSC is active particularly in the field of innovation management and was founded by Petra Tewes-Schwarzer. After 20 years holding leading positions in the cosmetic raw material and medical device industry, she is offering her work experience in R&D, marketing and sales as a consultant to clients. Key aspects of activities are the strategic planning and the technical implementation of marketing concepts.
beemo is a SME in the communication and information technology business. The company is a spin-off enterprise from Münster University of Applied Sciences. While developing high usability software and digital media, beemo successfully ties technology to target group specific communication, one key aspect being the knowledge transfer from specialists to heterogenous audiences.
Heppe Medical Chitosan GmbH
Heppe Medical Chitosan GmbH is a German manufacturer for high quality chitin and chitosan products. The company is specialised in chitosan qualities for cosmetical and pharmaceutical applications and develops new medical products with chitosan. HMC is known for a wide range of standardized chitosans. One of the main focuses is the development of new production procedures for chitosan derivatives and the scaling up of processes. A special field of interest is the research for new drug delivery systems based on chitosan and the use of chitosan as an implant material.
Enantia is a small independent private company created as a spin-off of the University of Barcelona. The main focus of the company is the synthesis and chemical development of organic chemical compounds for the life science industry. It also has vast experience in the development of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients APIs. Other areas of activity include co-crystal engineering and custom synthesis of specialty polymers.
